Closed Loop Partners Backs Renegade Plastics in Scaling Recyclable Polypropylene Textile Production

Closed Loop Partners has provided debt financing to US-based Renegade Plastics to support the development of a commercial-scale production line for recyclable polypropylene (PP) coated textiles. The financing will help advance the company's pilot manufacturing operations in Denver, Colorado, towards larger-scale production.

🔧 Renegade Plastics is developing a mono-material textile designed as an alternative to conventional coated fabrics based on PVC, polyethylene and polyurethane. Its technology involves laminating a polypropylene coating onto a woven PP scrim, creating a structure made from a single polymer that can be mechanically recycled at the end of its service life.

The material is designed for applications across construction, logistics, automotive, agriculture, sports and consumer products, including tarpaulins, protective covers, geotextiles, seat covers and industrial fabrics.

The financing from Closed Loop Partners' Catalytic Capital & Private Credit group is complemented by a $5 million grant from Colorado Circular Communities, supporting the development of Renegade's commercial production facility.

A key element of the business model is the integration of recycled feedstock. Renegade says its manufacturing process can incorporate recycled polypropylene (rPP) directly into the coating, with a target of exceeding 25% recycled content in finished textiles. The company also produces accessories such as eyelets entirely from recycled PP.

♻️ To support material recovery, Renegade has established a network of more than 10 recycling partners across the United States. The network is designed to collect used textiles, shred and reprocess them, and return recovered polypropylene resin to manufacturing.

According to the companies, fabrics containing recycled material can achieve an approximately 50% lower carbon footprint than comparable virgin PVC-based textiles. The project aims to address a longstanding challenge in technical textiles: developing durable coated materials that can be recovered and recycled rather than discarded at the end of their useful life.
