Eco Baltia launches new 45,000-tonne sorting facility in Latvia with advanced optical sorting and Matthiessen bag opening technology

Latvia has expanded its recycling infrastructure with the commissioning of a new municipal solid waste (MSW) and packaging waste sorting facility for Eco Baltia, designed and delivered by Azortum.

🏭 The new plant is capable of processing 30 tonnes of municipal solid waste and 7 tonnes of packaging waste per hour, reaching an annual capacity of 45,000 tonnes. Unlike conventional sorting plants that rely heavily on shredding, the facility uses adaptive processing and advanced optical sorting technologies to maximize material recovery while reducing energy consumption.

The sorting process combines manual pre-sorting, screening and optical separation to recover high-quality recyclable materials, including PET, HDPE, PP, paper, beverage cartons and film. A final quality control stage ensures high-purity fractions before they are sent for recycling or resale.

🔧 Among the key technologies integrated into the new facility is Matthiessen Lagertechnik GmbH's Bagsplitter, installed at the very beginning of the sorting line. Equipped with retractable prongs and an automatic rotor cleaning system, the machine efficiently opens bags containing mixed municipal waste while maintaining a stable material flow and protecting valuable recyclables for downstream processing.

🚀 Building on this proven technology, Matthiessen Lagertechnik GmbH recently introduced hashtag#BagRex at IFAT worldwide 2026 - the next evolution of its Bagsplitter product line, developed to meet the growing demands of modern recycling facilities. We look forward to sharing the first operational experience with the new system in the near future.
