Atlantic Copper Opens €550 Million E-Waste Recycling Plant in Spain
Atlantic Copper, part of Freeport-McMoRan, has officially opened its CirCular plant in Huelva, Spain, following an investment of €550 million ($615 million) in recycling equipment.
The facility is designed to process 60,000 tonnes of end-of-life electrical and electronic equipment annually, recovering copper and precious metals from complex waste streams.
The plant can recover copper, gold, silver, palladium, platinum and nickel, integrating advanced metal recycling into Atlantic Copper’s existing metallurgical operations.
According to Invest in Spain, the project combines circular economy principles with industrial innovation and supports Europe’s supply chain for critical raw materials.
Atlantic Copper President Javier Targhetta described the investment as part of the company’s 55-year history of innovation and growth. CEO Macarena Gutierrez said the project reflects decades of experience and a commitment to the future of European industry.
The opening ceremony in late September was attended by regional government representatives and Maree Robertson, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Freeport-McMoRan.
