Borouge International to add 14,000 tonnes/year of European recycled plastics capacity

Borouge International is expanding its European mechanical recycling capacity, adding nearly 14,000 tonnes per year of recycled plastics output across facilities in Germany and Austria.

Expansion in Germany and Austria

At its Niedergebra plant in Germany, formerly mtm plastics, the company will increase annual output of recycled mixed polyolefins (rPO) by nearly 9,000 tonnes. The additional capacity is expected to become operational in the first quarter of 2027. The facility processes post-consumer mixed polyolefin waste into materials for rigid applications.

At Wildon in Austria, formerly Ecoplast, recycled polyethylene (rPE) output will increase by up to 5,000 tonnes per year, with the additional capacity expected to come online in the fourth quarter of 2027. The material will primarily support flexible packaging applications.

Growing demand for recycled materials

The investments aim to meet growing customer demand for European recycled polyolefins, supported by evolving packaging regulations, including the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), and the need for more resilient material supply chains.

Borouge International’s European mechanical recycling portfolio also includes its Elin Pelin facility in Bulgaria, which produces more than 20,000 tonnes of post-consumer recycled polypropylene (rPP) annually.
