AIMPLAS Develops Digital Product Passport and Reuse Systems for Plastic Packaging
AIMPLAS · Technological Institute of Plastics is leading the VERSO project to validate plastic packaging reuse systems and develop practical applications for the EU Digital Product Passport (DPP).
The project will examine how digital product data can improve packaging traceability and transparency throughout its lifecycle, from design to end-of-life management. It will also assess reuse models and apply the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) methodology to evaluate environmental, social and economic impacts, alongside sector-specific risks.
📈 The expected results include pilot implementation of the Digital Product Passport, validation of packaging designed for reuse, and a roadmap for sustainable packaging management. The project will also develop good-practice guidelines covering the product lifecycle, with a focus on waste prevention, recyclability and regulatory compliance.
VERSO builds on the earlier OASIS project, which examined regulatory requirements and circular economy principles related to recycling and waste management. The new research extends this work to reuse systems, sustainable packaging design and the practical application of digital traceability tools.
Packaging manufacturer ITC Packaging and waste-management and recycling company RECICLAMÁS are participating in the project. ITC contributes packaging-sector expertise, while RECICLAMÁS brings experience in the recovery of post-consumer materials.
VERSO is funded by the Valencian Institute of Competitiveness and Innovation (IVACE+i), with support from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), under a programme supporting collaborative R&D projects between technology centres and companies in the Valencian Community.
