Tadweer Group Starts Construction of 400,000-Tonne Waste Recovery Facility in Abu Dhabi

Tadweer Group has begun on-site works on a new material recovery facility in Abu Dhabi, developed in partnership with environmental services company Urbaser. The plant is designed to process 400,000 tonnes of waste annually, strengthening the emirate’s capacity to recover recyclable materials.

The facility will handle 200,000 tonnes of municipal solid waste and a further 200,000 tonnes of commercial and industrial waste each year. It will combine automated sorting systems, artificial intelligence and advanced optical technologies to improve material separation, increase recovery rates and reduce reliance on landfill.

Operations are scheduled to begin in the second quarter of 2028. The project supports Abu Dhabi’s target of diverting 80% of municipal solid waste from landfill by 2031.

Urbaser was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract in July 2026. Once operational, the facility will be managed for five years by a joint venture in which Urbaser holds a 60% stake and Tadweer Group 40%.

The project forms part of Abu Dhabi’s efforts to develop an integrated waste management system and increase resource recovery at industrial scale.
