Polystyrene Foam Bans Expand Across the U.S.

As of January 1, 2025, states including California, Oregon, and New York have enacted bans on expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam products commonly used in foodware, packaging, and coolers. The legislation targets items such as takeout containers, foam cups, and packing peanuts. The bans reflect growing concerns over the environmental impact of polystyrene, which is difficult to recycle and breaks down into harmful microplastics. At least 17 additional states are expected to introduce similar measures in 2025.Reducing EPS waste has become a key priority for policymakers and environmental organizations aiming to curb plastic pollution and protect ecosystems.
