German company Staropack has proved that used  EPS from the yellow bag becomes new packaging through recycling!

In the joint pilot project of EPS manufacturers with LVP sorting plant operators, it was possible to separate EPS from the yellow bag with the help of an innovative infrared technology and to detect it according to type. The EPS collected in the yellow bag is sorted out and delivered to Storopack, among others, where it is processed into recycled EPS (recycled expanded polystyrene; rEPS for short). Storopack is thus closing the packaging loop for post-consumer waste and demonstrating how holistic circularity can be put into practice.

The pilot project is currently being further modified and optimised. The results will then be made available to other interested dual systems as well as plant operators for lightweight packaging.

The German EPS packaging manufacturers are confident that in the future they will offer their customers packaging made of rEPS that also contains recycled material from the Yellow Bag.
