Morssinkhof-Rymoplast Opens €30 Million Plastics Recycling Plant in Belgium

Morssinkhof-Rymoplast has opened a new plastics recycling facility in Lommel, Belgium, adding up to 40,000 tonnes of annual processing capacity and strengthening the country's domestic recycling infrastructure.

The €30 million investment marks the completion of a six-plant expansion programme supported by Fost Plus, Belgium's packaging recycling organisation.

Located in the Kristalpark III industrial zone, the 4.1-hectare facility is designed to process plastic packaging collected through Belgium's PMD bag system, including 24,000 tonnes annually supplied by Fost Plus. The site is expected to create up to 65 jobs.

⚙️ Advanced sorting for higher-quality recyclates

The facility processes polypropylene (PP) packaging, including butter tubs, yoghurt pots and ready-meal trays, as well as high-density polyethylene (HDPE) containers such as milk, shampoo and detergent bottles.

A key feature is an additional sorting stage that separates pre-sorted PP and HDPE packaging by polymer type and colour. The material is then shredded and washed to produce high-purity recycled plastic streams for manufacturing new products and packaging, including applications in personal care and household products.

The sorting installation was commissioned by Bollegraaf and Lubo Recycling Solutions and is designed to process up to 6 tonnes of pre-sorted PP and HDPE per hour. German equipment manufacturer NEUE HERBOLD supplied four wet-grinding and washing systems, each with a capacity of up to 1.5 tonnes per hour. The systems include granulators, flotation tanks, cleaning stages and gravity separation equipment.

🏭 Belgium expands domestic recycling capacity

With the opening of Lommel, all six recycling facilities developed under Fost Plus's domestic expansion programme are now operational. The network includes FILAO in Charleroi, Fromto in Beringen, Ecoo in Houthalen-Helchteren, Plastics2Chemicals in Antwerp, MOPET in Neufchâteau and Morssinkhof Plastics in Lommel.

As a result, the share of plastic packaging recycled domestically has increased from 12% in 2021 to 51%. The volume processed in Belgium rose from 13,463 tonnes in 2021 to 74,236 tonnes in 2025, marking a nearly sixfold increase.

The new facility strengthens Belgium's industrial infrastructure for processing post-consumer plastic packaging and returning recovered polymers to the manufacturing cycle.
