Matoha demonstrates carpet material identification in around one second
🔍 The device uses infrared spectroscopy and built-in identification algorithms to identify materials in around one second, without sample preparation. It supports PP, nylon 6, nylon 66, PET, PTT, wool, PVC and PU, as well as several blends including PET-PTT, nylon-PTT and wool-nylon.
This is particularly relevant for recycling operations, where different fibre types and blends can be difficult to distinguish visually. Faster identification can help operators separate incoming carpet waste into more consistent material streams.

Background:
Around 1.6 million tonnes of carpet waste are generated in the EU each year, according to the European Commission, with the vast majority historically going to landfill or incineration and only a small share recycled.
🇺🇸 In the United States, more than 4 billion pounds of carpet enter the solid waste stream annually, according to the U.S. EPA. The agency identifies the variety of materials used in carpets as one of the factors that makes them difficult to recycle.
