TRIMET Opens New Aluminium Scrap Sorting Facility in Germany

TRIMET Aluminium SE has commissioned a new facility in Hamm designed to process up to 40,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap per year, strengthening its supply of recycled raw materials.

LIBS sorting for aluminium scrap

At the heart of the plant is a laser-based LIBS sorting system that can analyse up to 150 pieces per second, identifying alloying elements including silicon, copper, iron and magnesium.

The scrap is automatically separated into different material fractions using air jets, then compacted into bales for transport and melting.

By bringing scrap processing and alloy sorting in-house, TRIMET aims to improve the quality and consistency of recycled aluminium streams and increase the use of recycled material in high-quality applications.

The company says the Hamm site was completed in just over a year, following cooperation with local and state authorities.
