Off-the-Road (OTR) tires range from solid forklift tires to giant mining truck tires more than 3.5 metres tall. Recycling these tires requires specialised equipment designed to handle large volumes of rubber and steel.

Multi-stage OTR tire recycling

The OTR tire recycling system engineered by SSI Shredding Systems includes several stages:

• Debeading — dense steel bead wire is removed to reduce wear on the shredding equipment.

• Pre-sizing — specialised equipment cuts the tires into smaller sections for more efficient processing.

• Shredding — the Tri-Shear T160 three-shaft shredder reduces the material to flowable pieces around six inches in size.

• Grinding & sorting — the Uni-Shear SR900 further reduces the material, while magnetic separation removes liberated steel wire from the rubber.

• Granulating — the Uni-Shear SR600F produces the final crumb rubber product.

The multi-stage process transforms oversized tires into separated steel and crumb rubber.
