Tokyo food trucks take bite out of waste with returnable containers. Japanese real estate company Tokyo Tatemono, in partnership with Kirin Holdings and department store operator Marui Group, is trialing a program to supply reusable, returnable takeout boxes to food trucks to cut down on plastic waste.
The test this week at Tokyo's Nakano Central Park features "Megloo" containers created by Kaman, which says the vessels retain heat well and can be reused more than 100 times. The containers are being supplied to 35 food trucks at the park.
Diners at the park can ask for Megloo containers for their food and scan a QR code at the truck to record the number of containers used via the Line chat app. After use, the containers are placed in a return box, with another QR code to scan to complete the process. These boxes have been stationed near the trucks, and at Kirin's office in the park and the nearby Marui department store.
The containers are later retrieved and cleaned by Kaman. Marui is also providing places for users to rinse out their boxes. Tokyo Tatemono aims to have Megloo containers used for about 30% of orders, cutting plastic waste by the same amount. #megloo #returnablecontainers #reusable
