Let’s Look Inside Latin America’s Most Advanced Waste Treatment Plant: STADLER and Ecourbis Ambiental Build a New Benchmark for Circularity in Brazil

A major milestone for the region: STADLER Group and Ecourbis Ambiental S/A Ambiental will build UTM Leste, the most advanced municipal solid waste (MSW) treatment facility in Latin America — set to start operations in August 2027 in São Paulo. With a processing capacity of 135 tons per hour (550,000 tons/year), the plant will

• recover 48,000 tons of recyclablesill

• produce 260,000 tons of RDFill

• generate 170,000 tons of organics for biogasill

• diverting over 308,000 tons per year from landfillill

European Technology Adapted to Brazilian Conditions

STADLER’s engineering is customized for Brazil’s unique waste composition — higher organic content, higher moisture levels, large bulky fractions and generally lower-quality material.

• AI-driven STADLERconnect for predictive maintenance, blockage detection & process optimization (first deployment in Latin America)

• Optimized plant layout to reduce civil works costs

• Reinforced equipment for stable performance under challenging waste streams

Turning Waste Into Energy & Circular Value

A key innovation: a dedicated drying line for organics, enabling large-scale production of green RDF — a clean energy alternative that diverts 132,000 tons/year from landfill to energy generation. The plant will operate as part of a broader eco-park, supporting Brazil’s National Solid Waste Plan by maximizing reuse, recycling, and energy recovery.
