Nerea™ Launched to Scale Chemical Plastic Recycling
By shifting from bespoke plant engineering to a standardized product-based model, Nerea™ aims to improve predictability in cost, timelines, and scale-up for operators, refiners, and petrochemical companies.
🌍 Global plastic production has nearly doubled over the past two decades, reaching around 431 million tonnes in 2024, while circular economy systems continue to lag behind consumption growth. As a result, large volumes of plastic waste still end up in incineration, landfill, or the environment. At the same time, regulatory pressure is increasing demand for recycled feedstock across key markets.
Nerea™ builds on a cooperation agreement signed in November 2024, combining:
🔹 Alterra’s thermochemical liquefaction technology
🔹 Neste’s chemical recycling expertise
🔹 Technip Energies’ engineering and modular execution capabilities
Alterra’s technology has already been proven in commercial operations for more than five years on real mixed plastic waste streams.
The Nerea™ solution is based on a standardized modular design, reducing engineering complexity while improving visibility on investment costs and project timelines. It is designed for rapid deployment across industrial environments and converts heterogeneous plastic waste into high-quality feedstock for petrochemical applications.
💬 “With Nerea™, we combine proven technology, feedstock expertise and industrial execution into a standardized offering ready for scale,” said Julie CRANGA, Technip Energies.
💬 Alterra CEO Fred Schmack highlighted the goal of simplifying the deployment of circular solutions at industrial scale.
💬 Neste’s Lars Peter Lindfors emphasized growing demand for reliable liquefied plastic feedstock and ongoing industrial expansion in Finland.
