South Korea Launches Nationwide Heated Tobacco Device Recycling via Postal Network

Korea Post, under the Ministry of Science and ICT, has rolled out a nationwide “Mail-back Takeback” program enabling consumers to recycle heated tobacco devices through local post offices and mailboxes.

The initiative follows a cooperation agreement signed in December 2025 with the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment, the Environmental Fund and Philip Morris Korea.

How it works:

Consumers place used heated tobacco devices (produced by Philip Morris Korea) into dedicated recycling bags available at post offices. Devices can then be:

• Submitted at a post office counter, or

• Deposited directly into a mailbox

Korea Post manages the collection and transportation of devices to certified recycling companies for safe processing.

The program aims to reduce environmental risks associated with improper disposal of batteries and electronic components, while increasing recycling rates and compliance. By leveraging the country’s existing postal logistics infrastructure, the system simplifies participation and improves nationwide accessibility.

In addition to heated tobacco devices, Korea Post is also supporting mail-in recycling for unused medicines, coffee capsules and other household waste streams, further strengthening the role of post offices in South Korea’s circular economy strategy.
