Europe’s plastics recycling industry is facing an existential crisis. Despite €5 billion in investments (2020–2023) and 12.5 million tonnes of installed capacity, recyclers are struggling due to: low demand for recycled plastics, the persistent cost advantage of virgin materials (fossil fuel subsidies, unpriced environmental costs), and a surge of underpriced imports.

The Bureau of International Recycling (BIR) has officially announced that its World Recycling Convention & Exhibition will take place in Bangkok, Thailand, on 27–28 October 2025. This will be the first time in BIR’s history that the global recycling industry’s flagship event is held in Thailand — a strategic move that highlights the growing importance of the recycling sector within the ASEAN region and Asia more broadly.
