Edible Innovation: Akorn Launches Natural Coating to Replace Plastic on Cucumbers.

Akorn Technology, Inc. has unveiled a plant-based, edible coating for cucumbers, offering a promising alternative to single-use plastic wrap in fresh produce packaging. The solution — part of the company’s Natural Advantage line — creates an invisible, protective layer that extends shelf life and maintains the vegetable’s vibrant colour, texture and crispness. Unlike conventional plastic wraps, which can trap ethylene and accelerate spoilage, Akorn’s coating preserves freshness without contributing to plastic pollution. “We’re offering all the benefits of plastic — without the plastic,” says Akorn COO Xander Shapiro. “Consumers want clean, natural solutions. We’ve made one that also works for retailers.”

Made from upcycled, non-GMO plant materials, the coating aligns with circular economy principles and supports the transition to compostable, bio-based packaging systems. Retailers across the US and Europe are already exploring implementation, which reportedly requires only minor operational adjustments.

🟢 Why it matters:

Reduces reliance on fossil-derived plastic Helps cut food waste by extending freshness Aligns with growing demand for low-impact, scalable packaging solutions Stay tuned as more retailers turn to bio-innovation to meet sustainability targets and reshape the future of fresh produce.
