🇳🇴 OSLO, July 2026 — Plastics recovered from residual municipal waste at ROAF - Romerike avfallsforedling IKS are now being supplied on a regular basis to Områ, Norway's national plastic sorting facility, following the recommissioning of the processing line. The development marks another step in expanding the country's infrastructure for recovering plastics from mixed waste.

Områ is a joint venture between TOMRA (65%) and Plastretur AS (35%) and is designed to process up to 90,000 tonnes of plastic packaging annually, representing a significant share of Norway's plastic packaging waste.

⚙️ The facility is equipped with 33 TOMRA near-infrared (NIR) optical sorters that separate mixed plastic packaging into up to ten polymer fractions, including PET, HDPE, LDPE, PP and PS. The sorted materials are then supplied as feedstock for mechanical recycling.

📦 The renewed deliveries from ROAF demonstrate how plastics recovered from residual household waste can be returned to the recycling value chain instead of being sent for energy recovery. Norway is also planning additional mixed waste sorting facilities, which are expected to increase the recovery of recyclable materials from municipal waste streams.
